T.D. SMYERS and LEAD EMPLOYERS FOCUS ON JOBS FOR VETS

T.D.-SmyersVeterans making the transition from military to private sector employment will want to attend a special event placing them front and center with military recruiters whose employers want to HIRE VETS. T.D. Smyers will keynote Employability: Focus on Veterans on July 19, 2014 at Tarrant County College District. Smyers is the Chief Executive Officer of the North Texas Region of the American Red Cross. His selection for this distinguished Red Cross post in 2012 marked Smyers’ transition to the independent sector from a successful career in the US Navy. His Navy history includes numerous senior leadership roles in diverse, remote locations as well as Navy Headquarters at the Pentagon. After donning his Naval Flight Officer “Wings of Gold” in 1985, Smyers launched on a career in naval aviation that ultimately led to receipt of the Legion of Merit for his leadership of Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base as the eighth Commanding Officer. Smyers gained formal recognition from Fort Worth’s Chisholm Trail Chapter of the Red Cross by being selected Military Member of the Year in 2009. Smyers chaired the USS Fort Worth Commissioning Committee and now leads Fort Worth’s support of her namesake ship as a Navy League Vice President and member of both the North Texas Leaders and Executives Advocating Diversity and Fort Worth Council Board of Directors. He also serves on the Executive Council of the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl and the Fort Worth Executive Roundtable.

Smyers holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from The United States Naval Academy and a Master’s Degree in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University’s Industrial College of the Armed Forces. “T.D. is definitely the right person to speak to veterans who may have challenges as they look for positions in the private sector,” says Gyna Bivens, President & Executive Director of North Texas LEAD. “Initially, our plans included an intimate talk with veterans and a panel discussion.” Bivens says plans quickly changed as military recruiters began brain-storming. “Before you knew it, the military recruiters quickly developed an agenda for workshops that will deliver more substance for those who attend,” she stated. This is LEAD’s second installment of its Employability Distinguished Lecture Series. Veterans and Exhibitors may Register Now.
